レナード・ホーナーの報告の reasonable enjoyment of life とは何か？ （その2）

　前の記事（2025年10月30日）で「英語版では、reasonable を使った箇所は他に六つ見つかりました。」と記して、英語版から抜粋しましたが、日本語訳をつけておりませんでした。日本語訳をつけておきます。

The religious reflex of the real world can, in any case, only then finally vanish, when the practical relations of everyday life offer to man none but perfectly intelligible 

and reasonable relations with regard to his fellowmen and to nature. (ディーツ版23巻94頁。)　およそ、現実の世界の宗教的な反射は、実践的な日常生活の諸関係が人間にとって相互間および対自然のいつでも透明な合理的関係を表わすようになったときに、はじめて消滅しうるのである。（岡崎次郎訳。）

Look, for example, at those schemes of the masters which the “respectable” press praised as models of “what a reasonable degree of care and method can accomplish.”（ディーツ版23巻307頁。）りっぱな新聞が「適度の注意と方法とが完成しうるもの」の見本としてほめあげたあの工場主方式を見てみよう。（岡崎次郎訳。）

レナード・ホーナーの報告の reasonable enjoyment of life とは何か？ （その1）

　　前回の記事で reasonable enjoyment of life とは何か？　を検討したくて･･･と述べておりました。 （今回の記事で、太字強調はすべてブログ主がつけております。）

The question of a farther limitation of the hours of factory labour by legislative interference  has been again renewed, and I have heard it discussed both by masters and operatives. It is  certainly much to be regretted that any class of persons should toil 12 hours a-day, which, including the time fortheir meals and for going to and returning from their work, amounts, in fact, to 14 ofthe 24hours. There can be little doubt that working 10 hours a-day would be more favourable to health and the enjoyment of life than 12 hours can be; but without entering into the question of health, no one will hesitate, I think, to admit that, in a moral point of view, so entire an absorption of the time of the working classes,without intermission, from the early age of 13, and in trades not subject to restriction, much younger, must be extremely prejudicial, and is an evil greatly to be deplored.  For the sake, therefore, of public morals, of bringing up an orderly population, and of giving the great body of the people a reasonable enjoyment of life, it is much to be desired that in all trades some portion of every working-day should be reserved for rest and leisure.（『工場監督官報告書。1841年12月31日。』におけるレナード・ホーナーの所述。（ディーツ版23巻294頁の脚註131に引用されている。）ただし、もとの報告書が Google Books には見つからず、『工場監督官報告書。1845年4月30日。』に引用されてあるものを利用した。下線部は、『資本論』に引用された際に省略された箇所である。）

 また、次の二つの箇所も、reasonable enjoyment と関連しそうです。　

（...）いわゆる必要欲望の範囲もその充足の仕方もそれ自身一つの歴史的な産物であり、したがって、だいたいにおいて一国の文化段階によって定まるものであり、ことにまた、主として自由な労働者の階級がどのような条件のもとで、したがってどのような習慣や生活要求をもって形成されたか、によって定まるものである。（ディーツ版23巻185頁。岡崎次郎訳。）

　ディーツ版23巻185頁のこの箇所は、2021年9月6日の記事でとりあげておりました。必要欲望は、日本国憲法で言う、生存権（「健康で文化的な最低限度の生活」）にかかわっていそうだ、と述べておりました。

労働者は、精神的および社会的な諸欲望を満足させるための時間を必要とし、これらの欲望の大きさや数は一般的な文化水準によって規定されている。（ディーツ版23巻246頁。岡崎次郎訳。）

　ここまでで、文字数が3200字を超えました。いったん終了して、次回に続けます。

『工場監督官報告書。1845年4月30日。』はGoogle Booksにあり、かつダウンロードできます。

    It is self-evident that there can be no substantial improvement in the moral
 and social condition of persons who, from 13 years of age to the end of their
 physical capability of so working, are occupied in their trade 14 1/2 hours of every day; viz. , 12 hours actual work, an hour and three quarters for meals, and three  quarters of an hour for going to the place of work and returning home, whether the employment be that of a factory or any other; and that they are cut off from a reasonable enjoyment of life. （レナード・ホーナーの1845年5月16日の報告から。『工場監督官報告書。1845年4月30日。』）

　ここで抜粋した箇所は、ディーツ版23巻294頁の脚註131の、レナード・ホーナーの1841年の報告につながります。

　公の道徳のために、りっぱな住民を育てあげるために、また人民大衆に合理的な生活の享楽を与えるために、すべての事業部門で毎労働日の一部分が休息と余暇とのために保留されるということが切望されなければならないのである。（『工場監督官報告書。1841年12月31日。』におけるレナード・ホーナーの所述。ディーツ版23巻294頁の脚註131に引用されたもの（の最後の部分）。岡崎次郎訳。太字強調はブログ主。）

　合理的な生活の享楽は、英文では reasonable enjoyment of life です。ここで言う reasonable とは、妥当な、ということのようです。この点は、別の記事で検討します。

　今回は、reasonable enjoyment とは何か？　を検討したくて、用例を探していて、『工場監督官報告書。1845年4月30日。』はGoogle Booksにあり、かつダウンロードできます、ということがわかりましたので、報告します。

　『工場監督官報告書。1845年4月30日。』はGoogle Booksにあります。もともとはミネソタ大学の蔵書であったそうです。

　ダウンロードできます。ダウンロードすると、コピー＆ペーストができます。

　ダウンロードできると知らなかったときは、手書きで書き写していました。

　コピー＆ペーストできると、今度は、Google翻訳がしやすくなります。この点が大変ありがたいです。Google翻訳は、ヘンテコな訳を返すこともありますが、語彙力が圧倒的であり、かなり助かります。コピー＆ペーストの際に、複数の語がくっついてしまうことがありますが、ひとつひとつスペースを入れましょう。

　なお、複数の工場監督官報告書を、図書館に収める際に合わせて製本した模様です。

　上記の引用箇所は、もとの報告書では19頁ですが、PDFの通し番号の212頁にあります。　

　『工場監督官報告書。1845年4月30日。』に1845年5月16日の報告が収められているのは、調査期間が1844年10月1日から1845年4月30日までであって、調査したことをまとめるのに時間が一定かかる、ということのようです。

この衛生上の正義を自分で達成することが（ディーツ版23巻489頁）

　前回の記事は、次の箇所の翻訳のための準備作業でした。

[独] Ich wies nach, daß, während die Arbeiter praktisch unfähig sind, sich selbst diese Gesundheitsjustiz zu verschaffen, sie keinen wirksamen Beistand von den bestallten Administratoren der Gesundheitspolizei erlangen können.

[英] I pointed out, that while the workpeople are practically incapable of doing themselves this sanitary justice, they are unable to obtain any effective support from the paid administrations of the sanitary police.

　接続詞 während の訳は、「かぎり」ではなく、「かつ」とか「･･･し、」が適切であると思います。岡崎次郎訳を一部変更すると次のようになります。

「私が指摘したように、労働者は、この衛生上の正義を自分で達成することも実際にはできないし、衛生警察当局から有効な援助を得ることもできない。」

「私が指摘したように、労働者は、この衛生上の正義を自分で達成することも実際にはできず、かつ、衛生警察当局から有効な援助を得ることもできない。」

　岡崎次郎訳は、接続詞 während が条件を表すととっています。一方、接続詞 während は、『資本論』第13章の中で用例を探しても、条件を表すのに用いられた例はみつかりません。ほぼ、対比の意味で使われています。岡崎次郎訳は、接続詞 wenn か soweit か solonge が用いられたときには妥当だけれども、während が用いられているときには妥当でない、と考えます。

［付記］「衛生警察」とあるところは「衛生行政」と読み替えてよいと考えます（2025年6月2日の記事参照）。また、「衛生上の正義」とあるところは「衛生上の権利」と読み替えてよさそうです（こちらは、まだ用例を検索・検討していません）。

接続詞 während （ディーツ版23巻第13章。）

　今回、ドイツ語版はディーツ版23巻のPDF、また、英語版はMarx-Engels Archiveにあげられているものを主に使い、検索機能を使って用例を拾い上げています。

　ディーツ版23巻489頁の岡崎次郎訳で、接続詞 während の訳に疑問あり、それで用例を調べました。

[接続詞 während] 

　接続詞 während が出てくるのは、第13章に37箇所です。下の一覧表で、それらが、Ｓ. Moore と E. Aveling の翻訳した英語版でどの接続詞を用いて訳されたかを示しています。数字はディーツ版23巻の頁数です。「構文が違う」と記した箇所では、節が句に変えられています。

　13章の中では、13章脚註184では、「･･･している間は」の意味ですが、ほかは「･･･であるのに対して」の意味です。「かつ」と訳してもよい場合もあります。

[接続詞 solange] 

　接続詞 solange が出てくるのは、第13章だけでは6箇所だけです。訳し方を検討するには、もっと数がほしい。なので、資本論第1巻全篇を調べます。資本論第1巻全篇では38箇所です。下の一覧表で、それらが、Ｓ. Moore と E. Aveling の翻訳した英語版でどの接続詞を用いて訳されたかを示しています。数字はディーツ版23巻の頁数です。「構文が違う」と記した箇所では、節が句に変えられています。

　[独] während ≒ [英] while、[独] solange ≒ [英] so long as ですが、イコールではありません。

　[独]で während の使われた箇所を[英]で so long as を用いて訳した例は、第13章にはなし。

　[独]で solange の使われた箇所を[英]で whileを用いて訳した例は、資本論第1巻の4箇所にあり。

　ということは、 [独] während と[英] while とは、似ているが、while のほうがより広いらしい。[英] while は、so long as の意味を表わすこともあるらしい。

[接続詞 soweit] 

　接続詞 soweit が出てくるのは、第13章では14箇所あります。下の一覧表で、それらが、Ｓ. Moore と E. Aveling の翻訳した英語版でどの接続詞を用いて訳されたかを示しています。数字はディーツ版23巻の頁数です。「構文が違う」と記した箇所では、節が句に変えられています。

資本主義的生産がただ労働過程であるだけでなく同時に資本の価値増殖過程でもあるかぎり（ディーツ版23巻446頁）

　文法に四苦八苦したので記録しておきます。

　ブログ主の方法ですが、ドイツ語版を英語版と対比して読んでいます。英語版がドイツ語版と同じ構文を使っているときは読み取りやすいのですが、違う構文を使ったときは読み取りにくいです。今回は、違う構文でした。

資本主義的生産がただ労働過程であるだけでなく同時に資本の価値増殖過程でもあるかぎり、どんな資本主義的生産にも労働者が労働条件を使うのではなく逆に労働条件が労働者を使うのだということは共通であるが、しかしこの転倒は機械によって初めて技術的に明瞭な現実性を受け取るのである。（ディーツ版23巻446頁。岡崎次郎訳。太字強調はブログ主。）

        Aller kapitalistischen Produktion, soweit sie nicht nur Arbeitsprozeß, sondern zugleich Verwertungsprozeß des Kapitals, ist es gemeinsam, daß nicht der Arbeiter die Arbeitsbedingung [anwendet], sondern umgekehrt die Arbeitsbedingung den Arbeiter anwendet, aber erst mit der Maschinerie erhält diese Verkehrung technisch handgreifliche Wirklichkeit. （ディーツ版23巻446頁。角括弧[　]内はブログ主が補った。太字強調はブログ主。）

　Every kind of capitalist production, in so far as it is not only a labour-process, but also a process of creating surplus-value, has this in common, that it is not the workman that employs the instruments of labour, but the instruments of labour that employ the workman. （英語版（1896年）、422-423頁。太字強調はブログ主。）

　英語版は、every kind of apitalist productionを主語とした文を示してくれます。これを頼りにAller kapitalistischen Produktionが主語である、と考えて、わからなくなりました。語となるためには1格でalle kapitalistische Productionとならなくてはいけないはずです。

　そこで、gemeinsam を手元の辞書（『新アルファ独和辞典』）で引くと次の文が出てきました。

Die Liebe zur Kunst ist uns gemeinsam.（芸術を愛好することがわれわれに共通している。）

　この uns は3格・4格で同じ形なので、どちらかわかりません。『新アルファ独和辞典』には示してありませんでした。『デイリーコンサイス独和辞典』を引くと、gemeinsam は人の3格・物の3格をとって、「共同の、共通の、共有の」という意味を表わす旨、記されています。

　daßは接続詞で、英語のthatと同じようなはたらきをします。鷲巣先生の教科書では、次のようにあります。

Es ist sicher, dass heute Meyers kommen.（今日マイアー一家が来ることは確かだ。）

このように名詞的な副文が主文のあとにおかれる場合、その副文を先取りして主文の主語にするには、es を用います。（鷲巣由美子『これならわかるドイツ語文法』252頁。）

『新アルファ独和辞典』の例文のDie Liebe zur Kunstにあたるのが、es＝daßで始まる文 。uns にあたるのが、aller kapitalistischen Produktion（3格）。ドイツ語版の文を並べ替えて、『新アルファ独和辞典』の例文と同じような語順にすると、次のようになります。ただし、soweit で始まる節とaber で始まる節は省略しています。また、角括弧[　]内は引き続き補っています。

Es ist aller kapitalistischen Produktion gemeinsam, daß nicht der Arbeiter die Arbeitsbedingung [anwendet], sondern umgekehrt die Arbeitsbedingung den Arbeiter anwendet.（どんな資本主義的生産にも労働者が労働条件を使うのではなく逆に労働条件が労働者を使うのだということは共通である。）

【英語版について】児童の時間や健康やエネルギーを無駄にし、乱費するのは誰か、または何か（ディーツ版23巻507頁）。

　そこでは彼もまた、なかんずく、上級および中級の児童の一面的で不生産的で長すぎる授業時間がいたずらに教師の労働を多くしているということ、「またそれが児童の時間や健康やエネルギーを単に無駄にするだけでなくまったく有害に乱費する」ということを示している。（ディーツ版23巻507頁。岡崎次郎訳。太字強調はブログ主。）

　岡崎次郎訳では、それ＝授業時間、と読み取れます。

　英語版では、かぎ括弧内が、「また教師は児童の時間や健康やエネルギーを単に無駄にするだけでなくまったく有害に乱費する」と、主語が授業時間から教師に替っています。

He there shows, amongst other things, how the monotonous and uselessly long school hours of the children of the upper and middle classes, uselessly add to the labour of the teacher, “while he not only fruitlessly but absolutely injuriously, wastes the time, health, and energy of the children.”

　ドイツ語版は次の通り。

　Er zeigt hier auch u.a. noch, wie der einseitige unproduktive und verlängerte Schultag der Kinder der höhern und mittlern Klassen die Arbeit der Lehrer nutzlos vermehrt, "während er Zeit, Gesundheit und Energie der Kinder nicht nur fruchtlos, sondern absolut schädlich verwüstet." （太字強調はブログ主。）

”while he not only fruitlessly but absolutely injuriously, wastes the time, health, and energy of the children”（英語版）

は、ドイツ語版に則ると

”while they not only fruitlessly but absolutely injuriously, waste the time, health, and energy of the children”（英語版を一部変更、変更箇所は太字強調した。）

となります。they が school hours を受けます。

　なお、「教師の労働を多くしている」というところの教師は、ドイツ語版では複数ですが、英語版では単数になっています。下に、対照させて示しています。
